How Virtual Net Metering (VNM) Works

A simple way to go solar — without your own rooftop. Join a shared solar project, get credits on your bill, and even earn for extra energy.

Step 1: Users Come Together

A group of people co-own a solar plant. It’s built on any rooftop or land in your DISCOM area — not necessarily your building.

Step 2: Install the Solar Project

The group sets up a shared solar plant (minimum 5 kW). It sends energy directly to the grid — no batteries needed.

Step 3: Smart Meters Track Everything

Meters at the plant and each user’s connection track monthly usage and generation. Readings are taken by the DISCOM.

Step 4: Monthly Billing

Your bill is credited based on your share of the solar plant. Own 20%? You get 20% of the units generated.

Step 5: Earn for Extra Energy

Unused units are sold to DISCOM. You’re paid 75% of the government-approved solar tariff — monthly.

Step 6: No Open Access Charges

If your home and the solar plant are on the same 11kV feeder/transformer, no open access charges apply.
